Before you buy your shiny new pearls, make sure they're legit.
There are a lot of fake pearls out there and they can actually be quite hard to distinguish from the real thing, otherwise known as Freshwater pearls. But we're help to help - here are a few ways to figure it out:
- Look for the "luster." Real pearls have a unique luster that's usually described as "iridescent" or "glistening." Fake pearls will usually have a dull or plasticky appearance. Only real ones pls.
- Feel the texture. Real pearls have a slightly rough or gritty texture due to the tiny imperfections in their outer layers. Fake pearls in contrast are usually smooth to the touch.
- Check the shape. Real pearls are rarely perfectly round. They often have irregular shapes and ridges that make them unique, just like you boo. Fake pearls are often perfectly round and symmetrical, we choose irregularities all day long.
- Do the teeth test. It's a simple test that can help you work out if a pearl is real. Rub the pearl against your teeth. If it feels gritty, it's likely real. If it feels smooth, it's probably fake.
